Second Grade Curriculum
The Second Grade Curriculum consists of a teacher-directed approach to learning.
The Language Arts program includes instruction on consonants, blends, short and
long vowels, r-controlled vowels, vowel digraphs, diphthongs, base words with
inflected endings, compounds, contractions, prefixes and suffixes, and using
high frequency word vocabulary. Students are taught to use context clues,
graphic organizers, synonyms and antonyms, use references, and write summaries.
The reading series also incorporates compare/contrast, draw conclusions,
fact/opinion, and realism/fantasy. Textbooks, workbooks and consumable materials
are used to reinforce instruction.
Mathematics include addition and subtraction facts utilizing regrouping,
multiplication facts 0-5, word problems, money, measurement, time of day, and
telling time to the half-hour and minute. Students begin basic geometry and
fractions, and learn to read temperature. Many manipulatives and consumable
resources are used to create a more interactive learning environment.
Through the Science curriculum students learn about matter, and the different
lives and types of dinosaurs. Students are engaged through text and lab
activities. Native Americans, landforms, and map skills are taught through text
in the Social Studies curriculum.
Religion is incorporated through all aspects of the curriculum. Students gather
together for Mass and daily prayers. Students are also prepared for the
Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. The Rosary is prayed daily
using the public-address system. Weekly Atrium classes also supplement the
Religion curriculum.
Standardized tests are not given in Second Grade. Students are given tests,
quizzes, and graded homework assignments. Parents are given mid-quarter reports,
bi-weekly behavior reports, study habit reports, and quarterly report cards.
Parents also participate in conferences with teachers to review student
progress.
