3rd
Grade Curriculum
All subjects are taught by direct instruction, supplemented by small group and
partner work with students. All subjects use curriculum textbooks, workbooks,
notebooks, graphic organizers, and an interactive whiteboard.
Assessments are made through traditional tests, pre-tests, quizzes, projects,
pictures, graphic organizers, observations, and worksheets. Parents are kept
informed by weekly grading sheets, mid-quarter progress reports, and quarterly
report cards. Homework is considered crucial to supplementing class work.
Language Arts comprises the largest section of subject matter: Spelling,
Reading, English and Writing. Leveled readers, graphic organizers, pre-reading,
stories, grammar, writing, related spelling words, and workbooks support the
Language Arts program.
Math is taught daily, and is comprised of a timed fact sheet, lesson, and
worksheet. Testing occurs every five lessons.
Social Studies is taught three days a week and focuses on the different aspects
of communities. Students are responsible for several “in class” group
assignments. Once a week there is a focus on current events and twice per
quarter students must complete a current events project. Students also
receive computer-based instruction weekly to supplement the Social Studies
curriculum.
Science is taught on a quarterly
topic basis. Labs/experiments are part of the curriculum. “At home” projects
are assigned quarterly. Computer-based instruction is given to students
once a week to enhance the quarterly Science topic.
Religion is basically presented as content information, covering the story of
the Church, as well as Holy Days. Projects are periodically assigned. Students
attend Mass, as well as praying in the morning, before dismissal, and during
Religion class. The Rosary is prayed daily using the public-address
system. Weekly Atrium classes also supplement the Religion curriculum.
Grade Three participates in Standardized testing. The Terra Nova Tests are
administered in October of this grade, in addition to Interview Testing.
