Fourth Grade Summer Reading Assignments

 

Each child entering fourth grade is required to read THREE books this summer. There is a required project for EACH book read. These projects will be shared throughout the first week of school. These assignments should be brought in on the first day of school.

 

Section I.

 

All students MUST read: A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket.

Please complete all of the following for this book:

 

1. Create a collage for this book. See the attached sheet.

2. Write 5 questions about your book. See the attached sheet.

3. Brainstorm to find a new title for your book. See the attached sheet.

 

Section II.

 

Please choose ONE of the following books:

 

Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli

Charlotte1 Web by EB. White

Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

 

After reading your choice, please complete both of the following for your book from Section II:

 

1. Book Report - See the attached sheet.

2. Write a friendly letter from one of the book's characters to another. Be sure to follow the rules for a friendly letter! See the attached sheet.

 

Section III.

 

Please choose ONE of the following books:

 

Superfudge by Judy Blume

Cricket in Times Square by George Selden

Ramona and Her Father by Beverly Cleary

Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume

 

After reading your choice, please complete both of the following for your book from Section III:

 

1. Make a crossword puzzle using the characters and places found in your book, as the entries and questions.

2. Design a poster 11" by 14" (no larger!!!) to advertise your book. Include the title, the author, the main ideas, and your opinion of the book.      .

Authors face a very important decision when selecting a book title. Readers are frequently "turned on" to a book simply by noting its title.

Think about the novel you are reading and make a list of other possible titles. Star (*) the one that appeals to you the most. Take an informal survey of others who have read your book and place check marks √ beside their favorites from your list.
