Music at NDES

Notre Dame Elementary students participate in a variety of musical activities throughout the year.

The Kindergarten, MontessoriK, 1st and 2nd grade students receive two thirty-minute music classes per week. Montessori 4 yr. olds meet once a week for a thirty-minute singing and movement class. The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades each meet for a fifty-minute class weekly.

Each class level is also responsible for preparing one monthly Mass and participates fully in the readings, liturgy, and choral singing.

The students in third grade are given musical instruction on the flutophone during their weekly music class. (Flutophones will be distributed in September.)

During the Christmas season, students in grades Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th perform a concert for parents, families, and friends. The theme for this concert revolves around sacred music and the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Date and time to be announced.

In the Spring, students in 1st and 3rd grades, and "The Glee Club" will perform a concert for family and friends. Date and time to be announced.  

Montessori and Pre K will perform a concert in the Spring for parents and grandparents. Date and time to be announced.

The 4th grade will visit Harrisburg in the Spring and perform on the steps of the State Capitol as part of their studies of the history of Pennsylvania. Date and time to be announced.

 Electives:

Glee Club - students in grades 5 & 6 can sign up for the NDES Glee Club.  Practices are held on Thursdays after school beginning October 28, 2010 from 2:30-3:30 weekly.  (Pick up your child in the lower parking lot promptly at 3:30 PM.)

The Glee Club will perform Christmas music for small venues in the community (e.g., St. Matthew's Senior Friendship Club). The Club will be participating in the Big Brother/Big Sister Telethon on (usually the first Saturday in February, 2011), which will be televised on Blue Ridge Cable Channel 13, as well as performing in the Spring Concert.  Date and time to be announced.

Special Trip:

It is my hope that 5th and 6th grade, in order to celebrate "Music in our Schools Month," will travel to the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre to view a live concert performance by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic.  Date and time to be announced.

Talent Show:

During the month of March, we celebrate Music in our Schools Month by hosting a Talent Show featuring the students in grades K-4.  Various instrumental talents, soloists, skits, and actors entertain the faculty and student body at this show which is held on two Wednesdays of that month.
